This is a question that gets asked periodically but I feel like it hasn’t been asked in a while. So Oppo it is time for an update what do you drive?
I have a 2000 Chevy S10 4x4 with the 4.3 V6. It is a good reliable truck and it is still my first vehicle from when I was 16. Five years I have owned it then.

2011 BMW M3 E92. Sports Package. Manual.
Designed it for me and drove it off the lot with 7 miles on it. It was my first “new” car. I saved for years to afford it. I had to read the manual to figure out how to use the AC properly.
I’ve had some insane offers for it recently and have debated trading it in, but I dunno what I’d replace it with. I am not ready to give up Manuel yet for flappy paddles.

I didn’t like the mk5 rabbit/golf/gti/jetta when they first came out, but they really have aged well. I have an 08 rabbit and I’ve been pleased with the power being 180 from the n/a 2.5.
The jetta sedan (did they make a sportwagen for that gen?) is still a little ugly IMO and the passat is gross.

1. A 2011 Mazda 3, 2.0L, Automatic. Only options are the 16" Alloys and AC (if AC wasn’t standard for this MY, can’t remember). Former Enterprise rental car. 111,000km on it - bought with 54,000km in April 2013. It was, and still is, my first car. Has required nothing other than brakes/oil.
2. A 2002 Miata. 5-speed. Absolute basic car - Not even LSD. Only options were the chrome fuel door, and the mythical hard top. Has 177,000km; bought it with 176,000km in September 2015 and put it away for the winter shortly after. As it is a Canadian car, there are signs of a quality rust repair job via subtly cut body panels. I bought it to a) learn stick, b) see if I actually liked living with a convertible. (which would determine car #3 down the road), and c) learn to wrench. Since it’s a second car, I can afford to have it in pieces in my driveway while I drive the 3.

I looked into the R32 but it just plain uses too much fuel for too little a gain in performance. The FSI Turbo in mine isn’t exactly known for reliability but it’s not let me down yet, I did have some hesitation caused by bad plugs but that’s not the cars fault.

They are, but the interior complaints are well grounded. Soooo much scratchy plastic. I don’t really care though, it might bug me in a car but not in a truck. The only time it gets to me is when stuff starts squeaking together in the winter when there’s heat on one side and cold on the other. The seats though... if you don’t mind cloth, go with cloth. The seats don’t have any more contour to them but they do at least have traction. Power wise, the I4/5 blow away the Rangers engines. Of course the V8 does too but that goes without saying and isn’t really a fair comparison... Frame is rock solid. Only full box frame in the class.
But like I said, it’s very much a compromise truck. I could spend all day going “I hate this but I love this but I hate this but I love this”

I know what you mean. I could never be okay with a truck interior in a car (or any early 00's Chrysler interior) but in a truck it’s the right thing.
I’ve never driven one, but I’ve rode in a h3 with the i5. I can’t say I felt like it was the right match in hummer, but I’m sure it’s much more fitting for these trucks. This comming from the owner of a 4.0 4x4 Ranger.
